Please Watch This Film

Hello Faithful Market Goers. I know I owe a post writing up last weekend's lively Winter Market #2. But, I just watched a movie that blew my mind.

And you, being Faithful Market Goers, need to watch it:

My mind is still reeling from the experience, so I'm not yet ready to comment on it.

Here is what I will say: this documentary made me so completely grateful for the amazing locally sourced grower's market we have here in West Chester. It made me want to buy all of my food locally. It made me want to ask questions about how the food I eat is raised or grown. It made me want to understand the food industry, be a more informed (and vocal?) consumer, and completely particular about what food comes into my household (and down into my belly).

But most of all, it made me want to thank all of our WCGM farmers (and product vendors!) for their hard work and integrity.

So, WCGM...

...Thank You...

PS - if you view this documentary, I would love to hear from you. Leave a comment or email me (see top right corner of the sidebar). The issues addressed in the film reside at the heart of the WCGM, and I believe all of us here at the WCGM would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Although Michael Pollan, in the movie, says how there's not much of any 'food' in the grocery store, we have found that there is...if you really look! Giant, in particular, with its "Nature's Promise" line of organics, we particularly welcome. Buying organic cereals, milk, yogurt, etc. will send out a message: we don't want GMOs or high fructose corn syrup, and we want animals raised in more humane ways! Of course, shopping at the farmers' market is the best...but when you have to fill in, there are some options available, if you look for them and study those labels!

We're reading Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma. In it, we're earning that just because it says organic, does not mean we are getting the products in the best possible way. Like Lindenhof Farms' site claims, "Organic just isn't good enough." I've recently learned (and I'm always thriving for more info on our food) that organic milks made by larger companies like "Horizon" are able to label their dairy "organic" because they feed they cows organic GRAIN. Cows are intended to eat GRASS. Not grain. If cows eat grain long enough, they die because their stomachs cannot digest it properly and they become diseased. To avoid this, they are slaughtered before this occurs.

I loved Food Inc. I recommend you view "King Corn" and "The Future of Food" as well. King Corn is free to watch if you have Netflix. The Future of Food is free on Hulu.com.

GREAT INFO! Thanks for posting. See you at the market!

I watched this documentary with my husband a few weeks ago and simply can't bring myself to buy factory farmed meat anymore. I'm very excited about the Linde's products and pre-ordered some ground beef to pick up at the market tomorrow!
